Youth and Family Ministry Updates

JUNE, 2020

Just a quick reminder that all three of our children and teen groups will be meeting at 11:00am on Sunday mornings. This time will continue along with our main service time of 10:00am.

Our Y.O.U. continues to meet at 11:00 enjoying their time with each other.

The Uniteens are meeting with their leaders each week to share some of their stay at home experiences.

For those families wondering about camp for their Uniteens and for Kids Camp; we now have information. Both camps will be meeting on line with special activities that will be as close to real camp activities as possible. Each family will enroll their child themselves and information can be sent to you if interested. Contact Barbara below.

I send loving blessings to all of our families as we continue to hold each other in our thoughts and prayers.

If you have questions or would like a phone call, please let me know.

Are you bringing children?
When you bring your children to the 11 am service,
the greeter will meet and direct you downstairs where children are
signed into their special Sunday Soul Celebration.
At the conclusion of the service, the children are brought into the Sanctuary
for a brief time to be with us, sing the Peace Song and interact with us.
They will go back downstairs so you can sign them out.
Alternately, your children are welcome to stay with you during the service.
Youth and Family
At Unity of Portland, youth are a TOP PRIORITY.
We know that they are whole complete beings of Spirit.
Every youth has great value and worth.
Every  week our intention is to remind them of that, and to share with them
vital spiritual principles which support them on their spiritual  journey.
On Sundays there is time for them to remember the connection
they have with God, each other and our world.
Our  specially designed curriculum shares spiritual ideas on a weekly basis
through the use of music, story, spiritual practices and art.
This curriculum is available for viewing in the youth ministry office.
We  invite you to explore our Youth and Family Ministry through the  Mission,
Events/Activities, Parent/Guardian and Volunteers links above and we would love to hear from you!

Our Mission
A Message from Barbara Selvaggi
Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator
Every youth has great value and worth.
Our Mission
To empower and support our children, teens, families, and volunteers as they grow and develop spiritually.
To  provide a safe, nurturing, and unconditionally loving environment to  learn and understand who we are:
Unique individuals here to express  Christ within.
To educate and encourage daily living of the 5 Basic Unity Principles
and Universal Laws of Truth in all our relationships and activities.
I  am inspired every day to support a program which shares the Unity tools
for living a joyful, loving and prosperous life with our children and teens.
What a gift to be nurtured and raised with the 5 Unity Principles (adapted for children and teens):
God is all good and active in everything, everywhere.
I am naturally good because God’s Divinity is in me and in everyone.
I create my experiences by what I choose to think and what I feel and believe.
Through affirmative prayer and meditation, I connect with God and bring out the good in my life.
I do and give my best by living the Truth I know. I make a difference!
From Myrtle Fillmore, Unity’s Co-Founder
"Our  mission is not to entertain the children, but to call them out.
To be  always entertained is to be dwarfed and dependent.
To be ‘called out’ is  to follow the harmonious law of the soul’s unfoldment.
Who meddles with  the rosebud? What fingers are deft enough to pry open the marvel of  that folded beauty?
We are wise enough to leave it alone to follow the  glad law of its own unfolding, but our children!
Have we dealt with  these buds of marvelous possibilities?
Have we always remembered that  they, too, must quicken and unfold through the innate law of their own  genius?"
The Truth is that each of us has  EVERYTHING WE NEED within us.
Our youth programs do not strive to “stuff  information in” but to create an opening for moments of self-discovery,
self-realization and self-empowerment for our youth and the volunteers  who are blessed to serve them.
Our Youth and Family Ministry invites you  and your family to join us in celebration of the Divine within.

Barbara Selvaggi
Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator
My name is Barbara Selvaggi and I am the Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator here at Unity of Portland.
The most important piece of information that I want to tell you about me is that I Love, Love, Love! what I do here at Unity of Portland.
I have been here for 12 years and have been a Truth student since 1975.
I have been learning about and learning from children & teens for over 40 years.
I started this journey with my own family, of 9 children, and having a differently abled child right in the middle.
I have been trained and served as a counselor/mediator for troubled/street teens with the Juvenile Court system in Missouri
and created educational programs for Foster Care Parents state wide.
I managed and ran my own Spiritual based preschool for 13 years;
being the Director of 3 other major preschool/child care facilities here in Oregon.
I have also served as a Youth Director in a number of Unity Centers across the United States.
The quality I like best about me is my authenticity with children, teens, parents and volunteer teachers.
Together we form a team that supports my lifelong dream for all children and youth on their spiritual journey;
to foster the “knowing” of the “still small voice” within each of them as their greatest tool for a happy and successful life.
